The Best Place To Download Free Software

by Jermaine Maree on September 30, 2008

Note: This post is for downloading Windows software only.

Finding software to download on many software download websites is about as much fun as searching for a needle in a haystack. There are normally hundreds of applications listed in each category, including some which have not been updated in several years. Then there is the possibility of downloading programs that have spyware embedded in them. For years I would frequently research the best free programs available, maintain a “best free software” list, and check each company’s website every month or so for updates.

Then I discovered FileHippo.

What is FileHippo?

FileHippo is a website that provides a simple way to download the best free software. Their site contains a limited number of categories and a limited number of programs in each category. FileHippo’s focus is to provide you with quality software. The site is consistently updated with the newest version of each program, but older versions are also available for download. This is useful for those occasions when a new version of a program has a lot of bugs and you want to go back to the previous version.

Another useful feature is the most popular downloads section. This section lists the top 10 most popular downloads on FileHippo. Ideally these programs are most likely the best in their respective categories. Who would have ever guessed that downloading software could be easier than choosing a combo at <insert your favorite fast food restaurant here>?

Why You Should Upgrade Your Web Browser

by Jermaine Maree on September 1, 2008

What is a web browser? It is the program that you are viewing this web page in. Computers that are running Windows XP come with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). It works OK and you wonder why should you upgrade to Internet Explorer 7?

Security

There are many malicious websites on the internet that attempt to do things such as install hidden software on your computer or steal your passwords. While Microsoft still provides security updates to IE6, they have created Internet Explorer 7 to help better protect against such threats.

Improved Web Browsing

Internet Explorer 6 sucks as a web browser. There are web standards that all good web designers use when creating web pages and IE6 does not acknowledge many of them. Internet Explorer 7 does a much better job and it makes the life of your web designer that much easier.

Many websites that you view in Internet Explorer 6 look OK because good web designers implement “hacks” in their attempt to keep you happy.

Limited Support

Due to the release of Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft will eventually stop supporting Internet Explorer 6. They are currently working on Internet Explorer 8. Also, many web designers are no longer implementing their “hacks” to keep you happy. Eventually the websites you visit in IE6 will start to look really ugly.

Upgrade Your Browser Today

What are you waiting for? Help to make the internet a better place (and to keep web designers from pulling their hair out) by upgrading your web browser today!

Get Internet Exlplorer 7 (or be daring and download IE8)
